There is truly amazing fishing opportunities
in the Port Hope area. The Ganaraska River flows through
the centre of town, into Lake Ontario. A cold water
stream coming from the Oak Ridges Moraine, the river
maintains low 60°F temperatures throughout the hot
summer. The low temperatures and clean unpolluted water
is what combines to make this
one of the unique cold water salmonoid rivers of the
Lake Ontario
tributaries |

The Canadian
FireFighter's Museum
The Canadian Fire Fighter's Museum of The Municipality
of Port Hope was established in 1985 to depict the historical
development of fire fighting in Canada from about 1831
to 1955.
The museum collects, preserves and exhibits a collection
of fire fighting apparatus (7-10 motorized trucks dated
1921-1956, hand-drawn and horse-drawn apparatus), as
well as fire equipment, photographs and other related
materials to tell the story of fire-fighting in ealier
times.
Better than a history book
The gentleman in the photo above rediscovered his first
firetruck - the one he drove as a young fireman with
the Oshawa Fire Department. You can guess that Grandpa
and grandson had a wonderful time at the museum. Sometimes,
magic happens.
Along with the opportunity to use some of the earlier
equipment, there is an area where active restoration
can be observed and a gift shop on the grounds.
The museum is wheelchair accessible and group tours
are welcome. The museum is open from 10am to 4pm, seven
days a week, between June 1st and September 30th. Admission
is free; donations, retired colleagues and storytellers
are welcome.
